Turning a Founder’s Vision into an Organization Ready to Grow

Selected Work • Strategy + Governance

The vision was clear, but the organizational structure was still taking shape. How could the founder set priorities, build a board, and create the capacity to move the work forward?

Organization Early-Stage Nonprofit

Focus Strategy + Governance

‍Role Planning, facilitation, and board development

What Was Happening

The founder was carrying a vision the organization was not yet equipped to support.

Priorities had not been translated into a strategic plan.

No board was in place, and there was no process for recruiting or onboarding members.

The organization’s position within the local early-literacy landscape needed greater definition.

The founder had limited capacity to build the organization while also advancing its mission.

What We Learned

Strategy and governance had to be developed together. A future board needed clear priorities to govern, and the organization needed more people equipped to carry those priorities forward.

We clarified the direction, built the board-recruitment process, and equipped the founder to carry both forward.

How We Worked Together

Set the Direction

We reviewed existing materials and worked through the organization’s priorities across programs, partnerships, fundraising, marketing, finance, and board development.

Build the Board Pathway

We created a repeatable recruitment and onboarding process, including a prospectus, application, candidate tracker, welcome packet, and orientation deck.

Support the Founder

We advised the founder on candidate interviews and networking and helped create an opportunity for her to introduce the organization to prospective board members.

What Changed

Shared Direction

The strategic plan established goals, measures, timelines, and ownership across six areas of the organization.

Board-Building System

Recruitment and onboarding no longer had to be created candidate by candidate. The founder had a complete set of materials she could continue using.

Governance in Place

The organization moved from having no board to meeting Maryland’s board requirements, creating greater capacity for its next stage of growth.

The Broader Lesson

A strategic plan becomes more useful when the people, roles, and governance needed to carry it forward are built alongside it.
